Extortion and usury: these are the crimes that led to the arrest of a forty-eight-year-old man from Cagliari, who first granted a loan to a woman, with “extortionate” interest rates, then tried to steal her car.
The investigations were conducted by the Mobile Squad agents. The victim, a fifty-eight-year-old, was in need and had turned to him for four thousand euros. The loan was granted to her, in cash, on the condition that she repay five thousand euros within three weeks. As a guarantee for the debt, the woman handed over her car, worth thirteen thousand euros.
Once the deadline had expired, the 48-year-old threatened to proceed with the transfer of ownership.
The woman, desperate, turned to the police. Having reconstructed the story, the agents of the Flying Squad arrested the alleged extortionist, already the recipient of the preventive measure of the oral warning of the police commissioner: the doors of prison opened for the forty-eight-year-old.
"Reporting," the Police Headquarters say, "is an act of courage that can make a difference not only for those who suffer an injustice, but also for the entire community, especially when one is experiencing a moment of vulnerability, fear and poverty. It can represent a fundamental step in helping to build a more solid justice system and prevent further criminal episodes, making the community a safer place for everyone.
Acting promptly is essential: reporting not only determines the beginning of a protection process but also helps prevent further abuse."
