The Businco regional oncology center in Cagliari is back in the spotlight following a complaint filed by the family of a deceased patient. This case refocuses attention on a healthcare system brought to its knees by years of unresolved issues .

Gianfranco Angioni, company representative for USB Sanità, intervened with a harsh denunciation, speaking bluntly of a structure now on the verge of collapse.

"This sad event represents a profound pain, which deserves respect and attention from the competent authorities," Angioni declared, "but it is also a symptom of a system that is no longer able to guarantee effective responses."

The trade unionist expresses solidarity with healthcare workers and highlights the great daily commitment of doctors, nurses and social health workers .

"They are professionals who face enormous challenges every day, often in challenging conditions, to ensure patients receive the best possible care. The oncology environment is already very challenging, and they experience it on the front lines."

According to the union, the situation within the facility has become unsustainable, primarily due to severe staffing shortages. The medical oncology ward, like other departments at Businco, is forced to manage a very high number of patients with limited resources.

"The staff is understaffed," Angioni complains, "and every day they experience the burden of a regional system struggling to provide oncology care."

The difficulties would also have increased due to the surgical reorganization related to the work in the operating rooms, financed with funds from the PNRR.

"These interventions," he emphasizes, "have contributed to further lengthening waiting lists, precluding access to numerous surgical specialties."

USB Sanità believes the situation requires urgent intervention from the institutions . Angioni is calling for increased staffing, the hiring of new staff with reliable resources, and ongoing monitoring of the hospital's progress.

"Only in this way," he concludes, "will all company departments, including the Healthcare Professions Complex Structure, be able to provide timely responses to departments, preventing staff from being left alone to manage the emergency."
