The number of monumental trees of the Municipality of Cagliari present in the Sardinian regional list is enriched, with the addition of three new specimens that bring the total to ten. These are the Ficus macrophylla planted in Piazza Ingrao (at the intersection between Via Roma and Via Regina Margherita), the Cupressus sempervirens hosted in the Municipal Cemetery of Pirri and the Erythrina near Piazza Annunziata.
The three new additions are in addition to the other seven trees already present : in the Public Gardens there are two specimens of Ficus macrophylla, a specimen of Gleditsia triacanthos and a specimen of Jacaranda mimosifolia; in the Rimembranze park one of Prosopis torquata; in Piazza Matteotti there is a further specimen of Ficus macrophylla; finally, in Vico San Giovanni, one of Araucaria heterophylla in a private area. The measure was adopted on Tuesday 21 January by the Municipal Council which approved, with its own resolution, the proposal to include three city trees in the annual update of the regional list of monumental trees.
"Thanks to this resolution, three more historic city trees have been added to the list of monumental trees," commented Luisa Giua Marassi, Councilor for Urban Ecology, Environment and Public Green Spaces. " This act will guarantee greater protection for the plants and will allow the administration access to additional economic resources for their maintenance and care , as already happens for the other trees included in the list."
There is also other news on greenery: «In the coming months of 2025, thanks to the awarding of a regional contribution relating to monumental trees», continues Giua Marassi, «the Parks, greenery and wildlife management service will coordinate interventions for the maintenance of five historic plants (the Ficus, the Gleditsia and the Jacaranda of the Public Gardens, the Prosopis of the Parco delle Rimembranze and the Ficus of Piazza Matteotti) ».
