"We don't want to be stopped," repeated some protesters who gathered today in Piazza Garibaldi in solidarity with the Palestinian people and against the repression of their struggles, on the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Despite the police denying permission, two hundred people still chose to take to the streets, waving slogans and flags, while the police's blue flashing lights and a water cannon controlled access.
"We weren't expecting such a display of force, but it was necessary to be there," explains Pierluigi Caria, a member of A Foras, the association that organized the rally. "January 27th serves to remember the victims of Nazism and to oppose genocide, like the one currently affecting the Palestinian people."
Around 6:30 PM, the protesters attempted to advance along Via Garibaldi but were blocked by the police. They then split up and walked through the streets of the Villanova neighborhood, before reconvening on Viale Regina Elena, where a CTM bus stopped them and the officers, who were lined up in riot gear.
Eventually they continued towards the public gardens, where they were stopped and identified by the police.
