The Municipality of Cagliari and associations joined forces for the voluntary collection of non-hazardous waste. A memorandum of understanding was signed at Palazzo Bacaredda. In the Sala del Retablo, Mayor Massimo Zedda and Councilor for Urban Ecology, Environment, and Public Parks Luisa Giua Marassi were joined by representatives of the participating associations: Marevivo Sardegna, Medsea, Plastic Free Odv Onlus, Legambiente Sardegna, Legambiente Cagliari, Cittadinanzattiva, Rebelterra Fondazione Domus De Luna, and Cittadinanzattiva Oikos.
The three-year agreement promotes ongoing collaboration between the Municipality and associations for environmental education and awareness-raising activities, volunteering, public space maintenance, and citizen engagement. It also provides for the coordination of initiatives and the possibility of developing a shared calendar of activities.
Zedda noted that "Cagliari and Trento are at the top of the national rankings, with over 76% separate waste collection." A figure that, according to the mayor, testifies to the "virtuous behavior of most residents."
The operational protocol specifically regulates voluntary non-hazardous waste collection activities in public areas. The organization of the initiatives remains the responsibility of the promoters. The Municipality provides logistical support by providing bags, identifying drop-off points, and waste collection.
Events must be notified to the Hygiene, Urban Decorum, and Environmental Department at least 15 days in advance, specifying the affected area and the contact information of the contact person. Organizers must also ensure participants are covered by insurance. Only non-hazardous waste, such as cigarette butts, bottles, glasses, packaging, paper, and cardboard, may be collected during events. Plastic, glass, and cans, paper and cardboard, non-recyclable waste, and bulky items must be collected separately.
Hazardous waste, including asbestos, gas cylinders, oils, solvents, and paints, must not be removed or handled. Their presence must be reported to the Municipality with a photograph and georeferenced location. The bags must be left at the designated drop-off points designated by the Municipal Service. Transportation is handled by the Municipality and the public service provider.
