The nauseating smell hits before you even enter Via Pergolesi. For hours, it has been wafting along the street, invading businesses, entering homes, and making it difficult even to walk through the neighborhood. It's yet another incident reported by residents and business owners on a street where, they say, sewer problems have become frequent.
The latest breakdown occurred Friday morning, around 9:00 a.m., when a manhole cover collapsed, spilling sewage onto the roadway and causing a foul odor that spread throughout the area. Abbanoa technicians responded to the scene, carrying out an initial repair in the morning and a second in the evening, but according to those who live and work on the street, the problem continues to recur.
This new emergency adds to the controversy that has engulfed the same street over the bike lane project in the past month. This time, however, the protests aren't centered on traffic, but on a situation that residents and business owners are now calling a health and hygiene issue, demanding a solution.
