Cagliari, Sant'Elia's revitalization project is underway: "This will transform the neighborhood."
The Region intervened on 265 homes. The Municipality's redevelopment projects also continue.The rebirth of Sant'Elia, from maintenance work on the buildings in Piazza Lao Silesu to the abandoned external dirt roads. Work has begun on some of the 1,370 units owned by the Region .
Extraordinary work on the first 265 units begins today. €4 million is being spent. The first phase involves interior work: renovating bathrooms and restrooms, and renovating the stairs and common areas. Work will also be done on the facades. Area, the regional housing agency, is handling another contract for the facades. Another €8 million is on the way for the exterior parts, starting in three months.
"The municipality," said the regional councilor for Public Works, Antonio Piu , "is carrying out a whole series of redevelopment projects with its own funding: we are opening the fiftieth construction site across the island in three and a half months. We are doing it in Sant'Elia, in an important area for the region, peripheral and sensitive: a project that will allow many families to regain the dignity of living and housing."
Elevator repairs are also on the way . "They've been out of service for almost seven months," said a resident. "Many families are forced to stay indoors." Area has provided assurances that the systems will be replaced.
"In keeping with the work on the buildings," Mayor Massimo Zedda said, "construction work has begun on the outdoor areas. Work began several months ago to extend the Parco degli Anelli to the Terramaini Canal on the opposite side of Parco Nervi."
"The Sant'Elia neighborhood has a unique feature," the mayor said, " it allows Cagliari to remain Italy's oldest city because it has a large number of children, unlike other areas. Yesterday we reviewed the project, we allocated the resources, and work will begin on the municipal portion, the old town, with the completion of the work we began and completed during my first term on the Lazzaretto."
"At the same time," he concludes, "the project also includes continuing work along the waterfront beyond the old town's soccer field, reaching Scoglio beach and then up Viale Calamosca. This is a series of projects that will truly transform the neighborhood: we need to bring Sant'Elia closer to the city. It will be so beautiful that the city will want to visit Sant'Elia."
