"Our Curia has received news that Mr. Simone Maria Mameli, originally from Pirri and already the subject of previous warnings from the Ordinary, currently presents himself as the 'bishop' of a self-styled 'Old Catholic Church' as well as the 'president of the Italian Episcopal Conference' . After consulting with the Holy See, we can confirm that the claimed episcopal consecration of Mr. Mameli is absolutely null and void." Thus begins a note from the Vicar General of the Church of Cagliari, Monsignor Ferdinando Caschili , regarding what is being described as a "pseudo-bishop" who is proselytizing among the faithful in Sardinia.
But, Monsignor Caschili specifies, «the sacraments and sacramentals administered by him are invalid», since «the pseudo-bishop has incurred the crime of schism , according to canon 751 of the Code of Canon Law, for which he is not in communion with the Catholic Church and cannot receive the sacraments in It».
In light of the situation, the Church of Cagliari therefore urges priests "to exercise maximum vigilance, to avoid confusion among the faithful."
