He was only 27 years old, and had set out from Annaba with nine other compatriots on a fiberglass boat headed for the coast of Sardinia. He arrived dead. His body, without documents, was found aboard the vessel that landed a few days ago on the beach at Porto Pino.
According to the police reconstruction , the cause of his death was a head injury sustained during the crossing. A violent blow, perhaps caused by an impact with the hull following acceleration or a freak wave. Rescue efforts were unsuccessful: the young man arrived dead in Italy.
But behind that death there is also a dynamic that today has led to the charges of aggravated manslaughter and aiding and abetting illegal immigration.
Immediately after landing, the other migrants were accompanied to the reception centre in Monastir for identification .
However, two of them walked away unintentionally, disappearing without a trace. This behavior, in light of the death, immediately attracted the attention of investigators.
Within hours, the Cagliari Flying Squad tracked them down on Via Roma: they had three cell phones and €3,500 in cash . During the digital searches, a video emerged of the two men steering the small boat, along with other footage documenting the victim's final moments.
Some of the migrants aboard the small boat provided consistent testimony. The departure would have taken place from Annaba, with the crossing paid a total of €25,000 to the traffickers. The two men arrested are identified as the smugglers and responsible for the navigation .
After about two hours at sea, the vessel suffered a violent jolt, likely due to the high speed or the sea conditions. It was at that moment that the 27-year-old struck his head against the vessel's structure, losing consciousness.
Despite the seriousness of their conditions, the two traffickers apparently chose not to seek help , continuing their route to Sardinia. This decision, according to the Prosecutor's Office, in charge of the investigation, constitutes a crime.
