"With the completion of the environmental assessment process, a decisive step has been taken toward the rebirth of one of the most iconic and neglected sites on the Cagliari coastline, paving the way for the complex's restoration and transformation into a five-star hospitality facility." The Regional Council, at the recommendation of Environmental Protection Councilor Rosanna Laconi, as stated in a press release, "has decided not to subject the redevelopment project for the former Poetto Marine Hospital to an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), while introducing some requirements aimed at further improving its environmental and landscape aspects."

The project, valued at approximately €12 million, involves the restoration and enhancement of the main building and its annexes, in full compliance with landscape and environmental protections . The works, as stated in the regional press release, include naturalistic engineering interventions to stabilize the dune system, plant native species, restore the outdoor areas, and remove asphalt surfaces, with the aim of restoring ecological continuity and landscape harmony to one of Sardinia's most beloved and delicate stretches of coastline.

"After decades of waiting," says Councilor Rosanna Laconi, " a long administrative process has finally come to an end, allowing Poetto to be restored to its former glory as a symbolic place for the city . This is not just a redevelopment project, but a civic and environmental rebirth, capable of restoring life, beauty, and dignity to a place where decay and abandonment have prevailed for too long."

The project, sponsored by Colonia Hotel Srl (linked to the business group led by Sergio Zuncheddu, publisher of L'Unione Sarda), combines architectural restoration, environmental protection, and tourism development. All the planned works—from the removable swimming pool to the internal drainage system—were designed with minimal impact and full reversibility in mind, fully respecting the delicate coastal ecosystem and the protected areas of Molentargius and the salt pans. The goal is to ensure a lasting balance between sustainable development and environmental protection.

«With this decision» , we read further in the press release, «a story that has lasted years closes and a new page opens for the Poetto, which will finally be able to see the rebirth of one of its most emblematic buildings, a symbol of a possible balance between environmental protection, historical memory and sustainable development .
