Move to reconnect with yourself, to transform pain into expression. Since February, dance therapy has become part of palliative care and pain therapy at the San Giovanni di Dio hospital, offering cancer patients a new tool to deal with the disease .
“Dance is a language that goes beyond words,” explains Maria Cristina Deidda, palliative oncologist, “and allows access to new dimensions of self-awareness, helping to express emotions and memories through movement.”
A path that adds to the other forms of art therapy already adopted, such as theater, music and narrative medicine, and which has seen the contribution of prominent figures such as the dancer Carolyn Smith, who has been involved in raising awareness on the subject for years.
In the sessions, patients will explore their kinesphere – personal and peripersonal space – through basic movement techniques and physical expression exercises. The program will culminate in classes taught by expert dancers and choreographers, including Theo Piu, Gabriele Melis and Donatella Padiglione.
"Taking care of patients means going beyond medical treatment," Deidda emphasizes, "offering tools that promote emotional and psychological well-being. Dance therapy, with its non-verbal language, allows you to rediscover contact with your body and experience a fullness similar to that celebrated in Greek culture."
An initiative that confirms how the AOU is constantly committed to integrating traditional treatments with innovative approaches , to accompany patients on a path of acceptance, awareness and serenity.
