Cagliari, broken elevator in the Area building: disabled man with no leg climbs the stairs with his arms
Anna Puddu (Progressives): «Absurd in Sant'Elia, no one intervenes: let's restore dignity to these people»A popular building owned by Area, in via Utzeri, Sant'Elia district in Cagliari: so far the lift, when it has broken down, has been repaired by the tenants. To deal with the latest dysfunction, however, too large an expense is required. And they, with little or no wealth, cannot support it.
The result is dramatic: one of the inhabitants, "in a wheelchair (without a leg), having undergone heart surgery several times, diabetic and on dialysis" is forced to climb the stairs with his arms, step by step, crawling on his backside.
Outgoing Progressive city councilor Anna Puddu, who has always been on the front line in working-class neighborhoods, denounced degradation and abandonment by the regional housing company.
"Now the situation is this because the amount required to repair the lift is too high and most condominium owners have no financial means, with very low or no incomes," he explains.
These people, adds Puddu, "must leave home to undergo essential therapies and the Region should intervene immediately to protect fragile subjects, carrying out the relevant interventions".
Then the appeal: " Let's restore dignity to people so that situations like this never happen again."
