Six beds at Brotzu for young critically ill patients. A step forward toward the opening of Sardinia's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (TIP). The regional government has awarded Arnas Brotzu €1.6 million for the construction and opening of a six-bed facility at Cagliari's San Michele Hospital . The funds will be used to acquire the technological equipment, furnishings, and equipment needed to make the new facility operational. The funding is covered by the 2026-2028 regional budget and will be disbursed according to the project's procedural and financial schedule.
The new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit will be dedicated to the comprehensive management of critically ill children, from initial stabilization to intensive care and, when necessary, transfer to other specialized facilities. Its functions include the management of major pediatric critical illnesses, support for highly complex surgical procedures, and the continuity of emergency care pathways .
"With this step," declared the President of the Region and interim Health Councilor, Alessandra Todde, "we are giving legs to a strategic project for Sardinian healthcare . The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit will significantly strengthen the capacity to provide care for children requiring the most complex treatments, building increasingly comprehensive and integrated specialized pathways."
The opening of the TIP is part of the broader "Children's Hospital" project , identified by the 2024-2029 regional development program as a highly specialized pediatric center, designed to bring together the expertise of the mother-and-child area and serve as a coordinator for the regional pediatric network. The goal is to build a regional pediatric center at Brotzu capable of concentrating professionalism, technology, and highly complex care. "We want Sardinian families to be able to find increasingly advanced healthcare solutions on the island, reducing as much as possible the need to turn to facilities outside Sardinia," explains President Todde.
