Few cherries in Burcei. So few that the traditional festival of early June was cancelled . A terrible season in short with considerable damage to the local economy. Yet until the end of March, a decent season was expected. The rains of April and also those of May have caused damage, with the harvest barely sufficient for tasting at home. It happens more and more often due to the weather conditions and especially with the rains that arrive at the wrong time, with the cherries in the ripening phase.
The first cherry festival in Burcei dates back to 1954. The first variety to ripen is the "Regina" cherry. It is followed by the ripening of the "Nera" and the "Duroni", two varieties also used for jams. The cultivated area extends for about 75 hectares with 21 thousand plants.
They are found mainly in the towns of Mitzauena, Cea, Ghirranu and in other sites that develop a few kilometers from the town. It can be said that almost all the inhabitants own at least one cherry tree. But there are also those who grow several hundred. It is not for nothing that Burcei is known as the "Town of Cherries". In short, almost everyone has their own small cherry orchard. Red, juicy, sweet, beautiful to look at: a jewel in the crown for the town. There are also those who use the harvest to make syrups, herbal teas, infusions, grappa, jams, ice cream. Cherries are also used in cooking to flavor rabbit cacciatore and to create 'Appiconis', a bunch of grapes.
