"No surgical session will be sacrificed, no cancer patient will be transferred from Businco to Brotzu and everyone will be operated where they are admitted." Brotzu DG Agnese Foddis and health director Raimondo Pinna clarify in this way what will happen during the renovation of two of the three rooms of the Businco cancer hospital starting from November 20.
In particular, they explain, in the room that remains operational it will be possible to maintain the same number of interventions that will not decrease. How? "We are completely moving thoracic surgery from Businco to San Michele for surgical and endoscopic activity and hospitalization."
Thus, Foddis adds, "by transferring such an important department, this already eliminates the problem of operating rooms being renovated." The DG and the health director explained these details to the Health Commission of the Regional Council convened urgently by President Carla Fundoni.
The idea of moving Businco patients to Brotzu for operations (and bringing them back to Businco for hospitalization) was included in the renovation project for two operating rooms financed with 9 million from the PNRR. Why didn't the Arnas management communicate the decision to transfer thoracic surgery from Businco to Brotzu earlier? "We couldn't give any communication before sharing it with the department heads we met yesterday," said Agnese Foddis. The proposal will be shared with the unions shortly "because we certainly can't ignore the needs of the staff."
The explanations of the Arnas management do not fully satisfy the politicians. The president of the sixth commission Carla Fundoni says she is worried and perplexed: «We find ourselves looking for solutions in a month and a half, when more time would have been needed on such important issues. The commission will continue to follow step by step the meetings that the management will have with the staff and the unions, also requesting the involvement of the department. We cannot afford to remain inert, and above all we must not allow patients to even have the feeling of a criticality with respect to lists for interventions that could be extended and with respect to incongruous transfers».
Francesco Agus (Progressisti) is also concerned: «Today the image we have is of a company management totally disconnected from those who work in the facility. It is unthinkable that the main hospital in Sardinia is managed with decisions that are taken a month and a half before the start of such important work. And it is not possible that the mind is changed so quickly». A year ago, Agus recalls, «the idea to solve the problem related to the timing of the duration of the renovation work on the oncology rooms involved moving it by road: today that project has changed, and involves moving an entire department to another hospital». Politics, adds Agus, «must provide a jolt, on such an important issue decisions cannot be extemporaneous, but reasoned and shared with those who work in the facility every day»
