He had been reported by the Carabinieri for dragging his dog with his car, causing such injuries that veterinarians had no choice but to euthanize him. After receiving the criminal conviction, Angelo Luigi Desogus, 64, from Siurgus Donigala, decided to appeal the €14,000 fine, but the judge rejected any alternative punishment. He could now face trial or pay the fine.
The case that ended up before Judge Elisabetta Patrito is destined to be controversial, and in recent days she ordered the breeder to be sent to trial.
The facts date back to November 2021, when the Carabinieri reported the man for animal cruelty, managing to identify the suspect thanks to a camera.
According to prosecutor Enrico Lussu, the 64-year-old cruelly tied his dog around the neck with a rope and then attached it to the tow hook of the SUV, dragging it across the asphalt. In the end, veterinarian Silvia Corso, who examined the animal, decided to euthanize it because the injuries were too severe.
Having challenged the criminal conviction, the breeder also allegedly made a substantial financial donation to an animal welfare organization, thus demonstrating his reparative conduct. His lawyers asked Judge Patrito for both probation and a plea bargain: both were rejected.
He was thus sent for trial: now he will have to choose whether to go to trial or abandon the appeal and pay the 14,000 euros.
