Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is slowing down in Sardinia: of 66 outbreaks of Lumpy Skin Disease that appeared primarily in the Nuoro and Sassari areas—the latest occurring between Buddusò, Nuoro, and Dorgali in mid-September— 35 have been declared extinct, according to the latest report from the Teramo Zooprophylactic Institute, a national reference center.
Meanwhile, mandatory cattle vaccination , which began at the end of July, continues on the island. In Medio Campidano, the Local Health Authority (ASL) reports, 3,318 cattle from 104 establishments with 118 farms have been vaccinated. Three establishments, with six farms booked for next week, are still missing. "The Department's decree stipulates the end of the vaccination campaign on October 21, 2025, so we expect to reach vaccination coverage of over 95% of establishments and livestock raised as planned by that date. This result would not have been possible without the extraordinary commitment of our staff," says Maria Francesca Ibba, Special Commissioner of the Medio Campidano Local Health Authority (ASL). "We must highlight the great sense of responsibility and dedication of the veterinarians of the Animal Health Unit, headed by Dr. Andrea Concas, who gave up their vacations during this period to reach the goal set by the Department of Health by the scheduled date. My deepest thanks go to them for their work."
