Hidden in his camouflage camping bag were 250 sea urchins, caught illegally. It happened in Bosa , where the military of the Maritime District Office stopped an unauthorized sport fisherman .
The Coast Guard seized all the fishing equipment used and the fisherman was fined 1,000 euros . The sea urchins, some of which were very small, all still alive, were immediately thrown back into the sea.
The commander of the Bosa Maritime District Office, Lieutenant Alessandra Gabrini, recalls that in Sardinia, " with the exception of a few authorized professional fishermen, sea urchin fishing is prohibited at any time of the year and in any area . This restrictive measure was made necessary in order to preserve the resource and guarantee the repopulation of the species, which are currently no longer present in our seas as they once were".
