Matteo Berrettini advances at the Sardegna Open, Challenger 175 in Cagliari, after a marathon of almost three hours against the American Patrick Kypson .

Thanks to this victory, the Italian avoids slipping out of the top 100 of the ATP rankings. The Roman tennis player won the first set 6-4 thanks to a break in the fifth game. He seemed to have the second set under control after the break that took him to 6-5, but then the collapse: Kypson counter-breaked and the tie-break was lost 5-7.

It seemed over, especially since Berrettini dropped his serve early in the first game of the third set: the former world number 6 looked tired and disheartened. Instead, he broke back at 4-4, dragging the set to a decisive tie-break. The final shots were also up and down. Then Berrettini had two match points, the second one decisive.

He'll now face top-seeded Mariano Navone in the round of 16. Stefano Travaglia, however, is out, having been defeated in the third set by Dutchman Jesper De Jong. Tomorrow at the Sardegna Open, the Italian derby between Lorenzo Sonego and Mattia Bellucci takes place.
