It was a busy afternoon yesterday along the first stretch of Cagliari's Poetto beach. The Carabinieri responded to the Marina Piccola area after several beachgoers reported the theft of bags from sun loungers and umbrellas. The officers targeted three young Algerians who were caught trying to steal a woman's handbag.
They are a twenty-four-year-old and a twenty-one-year-old resident of the Monastir reception center. They were accompanied by another twenty-one-year-old homeless man. The three were apprehended after a brief foot chase . The first two were placed under house arrest, while the third was held by the military pending trial in a summary trial scheduled for Monday.
The reconstruction carried out by the Carabinieri , supported by the testimonies collected on the spot, allowed them to reveal the technique used: while one of the gang members acted as a shield with a folded deckchair to block the view of the victims and passers-by, the others went into action to steal bags and purses.
Another incident occurred in Calamosca. The Carabinieri reported a thirty-one-year-old Algerian man, also a resident of the Monastir center. He was stopped on Via Tramontana. He allegedly stole a swimmer's handbag from Calamosca beach. The victim was located by officers thanks to the documents found in the bag.
