He didn't want to wait until the last minute, August 3, 2026, when paper identity cards will be considered expired. So he hopped in his Piaggio Ape and headed to the City Hall to renew his card.
Pietro Cabras 's diligence was made public on the official social media channels of the Municipality of Baunei because of one peculiarity: the citizen who showed up at the counter was born on August 13, 1925 and is approaching 101 years old.
"Uncle Pietro, who turned 100 a few months ago," it reads, "has complied with the new regulations, reminding us—especially those who haven't yet—that all paper identity cards in circulation will expire on August 3, 2026, regardless of the expiration date shown on the document, and it will no longer be possible to request a new one, not even in cases of emergency."
