A lifer has attempted to escape from Bancali prison. This was reported by the Consipe penitentiary police union, through its national secretary, Roberto Melis. According to the union statement, the inmate managed to climb over the walkway wall , reaching the roof of the facility near the so-called "Rotonda San Sebastiano." Officers stopped him right on the perimeter wall.

"We are facing yet another episode that demonstrates how the security of our institutions hangs by a thread," Melis stated. "The fact that an inmate managed to climb over the walkway wall and reach the roof of the rotunda highlights a vulnerability we can no longer afford. Only the professionalism and timing of the officers on duty prevented the attempted escape from turning into a success for the fugitive."

"Working in these conditions is no longer tolerable," Melis adds. "The Sassari facility and its staff require immediate support. We are calling on the Ministry of Justice, the Department of Penitentiary Administration (DAP), and the Regional Prison Authority to intervene to secure sensitive areas, such as walkways, which too often become the weakest link in the prison system."

The autonomous penitentiary police union (SAPPE) also intervened in the escape attempt. "Around 2:30 PM," explains Antonio Cannas, national delegate for Sardinia for the SAPPE, "a Romanian inmate managed to climb into the walkway and then reach the roof of the 'San Sebastiano' roundabout via a water pipe, in an attempt to escape from the facility." The officers on duty, the union reports, "identified an alternative access from the area above the MOF warehouse, the workshop where the inmates work. Two officers then managed to reach the man from behind and, with the support of other officers, subdued him, preventing his escape."

"Once again," declared both Cannas and Donato Capece, Secretary General of SAPPE, "we must emphasize the professionalism, courage, and spirit of service of the men and women of the Penitentiary Police, who often operate in difficult conditions but ensure safety and legality in penitentiary institutions on a daily basis."

The union emphasizes that this incident confirms the critical issues facing the prison system, reiterating the need for increased resources, adequate staffing, and structural interventions to prevent similar situations. The inmate was immediately placed in a safe place, and the relevant investigations will now begin.
