Badu 'e Carros prison, 41 bis, Todde in Nuoro: "Unacceptable decision."

Regional President Alessandra Todde visited the Badu 'e Carros prison in Nuoro this afternoon. Along with Mayor Emiliano Fenu, she was welcomed by prison director Daniela Marras and the regional superintendent of the Sardinian Penitentiary Administration, Domenico Giuseppe Arena. The meeting was also attended by Giovanna Serra, the inmate ombudsman for the Nuoro prison.

The inspection comes at a crucial time for the future of the facility, which is listed among those involved in the national plan to strengthen the 41 bis regime . "It was an important meeting between institutions, marked by loyal collaboration, which we will not shy away from. However, the point must be clear," Todde said, "our concern is not the number of 41 bis places, but the risk of the prison being used exclusively for this regime . Badu 'e Carros is a prison and must not lose this vocation. It is a prison within the city, which over the years has built relationships with the local community, with volunteers, and with the Church. Transforming it into a facility exclusively dedicated to 41 bis would mean severing these ties and interrupting the processes built over time."

During the inspection, it emerged that the upgrade work is still ongoing . "I wanted to personally verify the progress of the work. We're talking about an ongoing construction site, with work yet to be completed. This is why it's necessary to initiate serious discussions with the Ministry of Justice and the Department of Penitentiary Administration. Decisions can't be made without a thorough understanding of the conditions of the site."

Todde reiterated that the Region is not shirking its responsibilities regarding security, but he disputes the overall approach of the plan. "We consider the idea of dedicating several prisons in Sardinia exclusively to this regime unacceptable , treating the island as a repository for the rest of the country's problems. We don't want to pay for being an island. This is a profound injustice that we strongly denounce."
