The rainy season is coming, but there are still too many areas at risk on the island.
From the south of the island to the Oristanese, from Nuorese to Gallura, from Ogliastra to Sassarese: there are 178 municipalities (data from the hydrographic district agency) that do not have a complete plan for the risks of floods and landslides; only 149 those who reported the presence of canals.
Out of 377 municipalities, no less than 338 are in territories that Ispra (the Institute for environmental protection) classifies as medium, high or very high danger. Territories where three out of ten Sardinians live.
The last census dates back to 2005, and as for the regional hydrogeological planning plan that evaluates the vulnerability of the territory, hopefully it will be necessary to wait until the end of 2022.
"Without updated plans, it is not possible to plan a mitigation intervention", warns Davide Boneddu, president of the Order of Geologists.
An updated plan, and therefore knowledge of the territory, "allow even more precise planning in terms of security and civil protection. It means that, even if a Municipality does not yet have a risk mitigation work, when strong phenomena are foreseen bad weather can always be able to trip the safety switches ".
For the president of the Sardinian geologists, "the approach to the issue of hydrogeological instability has matured: if we think that in 2004 the Pai (Plan for the hydrogeological structure) came into force in the Municipalities and before there was nothing, we are light years come on. But still today we go through the rainy months without the tools we need. Even today it is not possible to do a correct planning of the territory because not all the Municipalities have an updated plan and because there are no very important regional instruments such as the Pai landslides and the relative census ”.
BAD WEATHER COMING - All this while, starting from Thursday, Sardinia will also be hit by bad weather, with rain and wind. From tomorrow on the Sassarese will deteriorate, with thunderstorms expected in the afternoon.
"A disturbance is coming that will remain on the island for a few days", warns Lieutenant Colonel Carlo Spanu, of the Decimomannu Aeronautical Weather Service, "it will bring rains, especially on southern Sardinia, and locally we will also be able to witness abundant rainfall".
