Monte Urpinu chickens and ducks were killed by 'highly pathogenic avian influenza', the H5N1 subtype. The confirmation of the positivity came yesterday from the result of the analysis on organ samples carried out by the "Reference Center of the Venezie".

This, the ASL of Cagliari know, "supports, without any margin of doubt, the correctness of the measures taken by the Animal Health Service in relation to the slaughter of the birds present".

The viral load detected was "extremely high in organs such as the brain, intestines and lungs". It was necessary "the utmost timeliness in the management of the outbreak".

The results of the tests "on a sample of slaughtered animals, according to protocols provided for by national and international legislation, are not yet available, but the pathological tests already confirm the lesions ascribable to avian flu".

Good news comes from Molentargius and Santa Gilla: during the inspections no symptoms referable to the disease were found: "The carcasses of birds found and analyzed did not reveal any critical issues", they say from the ASL.

However, the alert remains maximum, because the disease "represents a danger not only for pets, but also for the precious birdlife resident in Sardinia, particularly susceptible as it has never come into contact with this type of virus".
