He contributed to the resistance of La Maddalena to the German occupation and to expel them from the island. Yesterday, September 13, at the age of 101, Giuseppe Marcellino wanted to return on the occasion of the commemoration of those events that represented the first act of Italian armed resistance to the Nazi-Germans.
Marcellino, moved, recalled those dramatic days between 9 and 13 September 1943 when he was among the soldiers who joined the outburst of pride of a part of our armed forces who, after the armistice, decided to oppose a much better trained and armed army.
Giuseppe Marcellino lives in Olbia and has been an honorary citizen of La Maddalena since 2022 and yesterday he was among the protagonists of the solemn celebration in memory of the battle and the fallen, at the Moneta shrine, in the presence of the mayor, Fabio Lai, and the commander of the Navy Petty Officers School, Francesco Maffiola.
Paying homage to the fallen were pickets from the Navy, Army, Air Force, Carabinieri, as well as representatives of the ANPI and the combatant associations.
Mario Me, president of the Carlo Avegno committee, and Almo Bramucci, of the ANPI, designer of the shrine, spoke.
There were many wounded on that occasion and several dozen fallen, including Commander Carlo Avegno, later awarded the gold medal, to whom the parade ground of the Navy Petty Officers' School is dedicated, as well as a memorial outside the barracks erected last year on the spot from which a German machine gun mowed him down.
