Arzana, the ancestral rite of transhumance: Lele's herd climbs the Gennargentu
As per tradition, the Stochino farmer leads his 70 cows towards the summer pasturesFollowing the rhythmic gait of the cattle, replicating a thousand-year-old ritual. That of transhumance. This afternoon the breeder Lele Stochino with his seventy Limousine breed cows left the pastures downstream of the town of Arzana to head towards Gennargentu, where his animals will find green meadows and refreshment far from the summer heat.
Accompanied by his young 22-year-old son Vincenzo, with them there is also the director Coldiretti Nuoro Ogliastra Alessandro Serra and a group of friends to replicate an ancestral rite that has merged with history.
Lulled by the symphony of the march of the cows with the sound of the cowbells, they will cross paths already traveled by others over the millennia, perpetuating the same ritual. The passage of animals through the streets of the town is exciting.
Forty kilometers on foot up to Gennargentu among centuries-old woods, observed by mouflons and wild boars that live undisturbed. Then a stop for the night near Lake Flumendosa where they will eat a frugal dinner just like his father did and his grandfather before him: pistoccu, cheese and bacon kept in "sa pocket" (this is how the saddlebag is called in Arzanese).
At dawn they will resume the long journey towards the peaks of Gennargentu where the herd will rest until autumn.
