Not only a priest, but also a scholar of Gallura's history, traditions, and society. Father Francesco Cossu, 90, who served as parish priest of Santa Maria della Neve in Arzachena for forty years, died this afternoon at the Sassari hospital. The news has sparked deep sorrow in the community and the diocese.

Born in 1936 and ordained a priest at age 26, Don Cossu spent much of his ministry in Arzachena, becoming a point of reference for generations of faithful. After retiring as parish priest, he continued to collaborate not only in Arzachena but also with other priests in neighboring towns, making himself available for services and confessions in the diocese's parishes wherever needed. Alongside his pastoral mission, he engaged in intense study and research on Gallura, the populations of the stazzi, and the customs and transformations of rural society. In his studies, he paid particular attention to the role of the Church and parish priests in community life: not only spiritual guides, but key figures in social coexistence, dispute resolution, and education. His publications are a significant contribution to the preservation of the historical and anthropological memory of the region, particularly Gallura prior to the advent of the Costa Smeralda.

Mayor Roberto Ragnedda has declared a day of mourning for Tuesday, the day of the funeral in Santa Maria della Neve, where the chapel of rest will be set up starting tomorrow.
