“AI and virtual worlds: new opportunities for territorial development” : this is the theme of a round table scheduled for Saturday from 9:30 in the “Maria Lai” room of the Faculty of Law of the University of Cagliari. The initiative is by the Lions Club Cagliari Host, Castello, Karel, Villanova, Monte Urpinu and Lioness .

"Lions International," reads a press release, "is a global organization that for over a century has had the mission of serving communities. Its motto, clear, powerful and simple is: 'We serve' - We serve - We are at the service of our communities and of those in need."

In operationally declining this motto, " Lions have always focused on the development of territories, supporting the growth of local communities with actions aimed at addressing social, economic and environmental problems, in the awareness that the well-being of people comes from strong, inclusive, sustainable territories ."

This model of action could not remain indifferent "to the new frontier represented by the irruption of a new and powerful tool such as Artificial Intelligence, whose enormous potential remains at the moment little known and evaluated by most, as well as the risks. This has led the national assembly of the Italian Lions to consider it essential to carry out a widespread work of dissemination and critical analysis on Artificial Intelligence on the territory, identifying it as a National Study Theme for the current year".

Saturday's initiative, " in continuity with the actions carried out over the years by many Lions Clubs, aims to go beyond general reflections on the characteristics and risks of the tool, to explore what tools AI can offer to territories to optimally and consciously govern their development ."

«Artificial Intelligence is therefore seen not only as a technology, but as a strategic lever that can help collect and analyze data, coordinate infrastructures, support decision-making processes and plan more harmonious and sustainable development for local communities».

The note also states that "as Lions , the task is twofold: on the one hand, to help raise awareness and understanding of the potential and limits of these tools, and on the other, to promote ethical and responsible use of AI, so that it is truly at the service of man and the common good ."

The morning of study is divided into two sessions organized in the form of a round table and both introduced and coordinated by the economist Mariano Mariani: the first, with the theme "concrete cases of territorial AI applications", will present projects already operational and all supported by the use of AI in the fields of tourism, territorial marketing, territorial digital twin, archaeological contexts and territorial information systems, with reports by project promoters and professors from the Universities of Breda and Verona.

The second round table, on the theme “AI, state of the art and prospects for the territories”, will lend itself to more general reflections on the impact and limits of the use of this tool at a territorial level, with the participation of the protagonists of the territories, public administrators, representatives of the economic system and professors of the University of Cagliari.
