Another attack occurred in Bancali prison. Last night, two inmates got into a violent fight, and when officers arrived, one of them, of Moroccan origin, lunged at them, pushing and hitting them. Three officers suffered injuries, one with a broken foot, and all required emergency medical treatment.
The USPP union reported the incident. "The priority," says the organization's president, Giuseppe Moretti, "is to protect the safety of the officers who once again ended up in the emergency room, with an assessment of the prison's internal management for safety and the safety of the Penitentiary Police, which is already severely strained due to staffing shortages."
For Moretti, "the frequency of violent acts carried out by troublemaking inmates is worrying when compared to the lack of adequate response measures by those managing the Sassari facility."
According to the USPP representative, "the usual consolidation of service positions is unsustainable because it exposes staff to extremely high risks on a daily basis and undermines every attempt to ensure safety, increasing the risk of the circulation of prohibited objects and illicit trafficking."
The union is therefore calling for the immediate dispatch of ministerial inspectors to determine the management's responsibilities, urgently strengthen the staffing structure, and, above all, evaluate the changeover at the institute's top management.
