The one who brought Sardinian into the walls of the final exam was Giaime Corongiu , a final year student, who asked – and obtained – to be able to carry out part of the oral interview in his mother tongue. A gesture that goes beyond the simple demonstration of linguistic competence: it is an act of love towards one's roots, an affirmation of the dignity of a language now confined to the private sphere.
Giaime discussed in Sardinian the theme of the excluded and the vanquished in history, starting from the famous painting The Potato Eaters by Vincent van Gogh and going on to analyze the law of exploitation of labor formulated by Karl Marx. The rest of the interview was held in Italian and French, as required by the curriculum of the European high school.
"Speaking Sardinian during the exam allowed me to better express a part of myself," Giaime said. "It's a language I learned at home and that my teachers have always valued."
The commission, chaired by Professor Andrea Prost, welcomed the request, recognizing language proficiency as an integral part of the student's educational path.
An example that gives hope. "We hope - the teaching staff commented - that this experience will be a stimulus for many other students who speak the Sardinian language and to raise awareness in the school to enhance this enormous linguistic heritage".
School, in fact, is the place where one cultivates and builds one's future without ever forgetting one's roots.
