An Egyptian fugitive wanted throughout Europe has been arrested in Cagliari .

The man, the recipient of a European arrest warrant issued by the Spanish authorities, is involved in a major drug trafficking ring dating back to May 2013, when a criminal organisation was transporting 16 tonnes of hashish by sea from Morocco to Spain .

The Immigration Office of the Cagliari Police Headquarters reported to the Foreign and Widespread Crime Section of the Flying Squad the presence of a person wanted in the European Union in the Schengen database.

The man was aboard a fishing boat docked in the port of Cagliari, where he worked as a crew member . Fingerprints confirmed his identity, and the Egyptian was taken to Uta prison, where he faces a sentence of six years and two months .
