Sardinia and Cagliari are preparing to become the international stage for sailing : from May 21st to 24th, the Gulf of Angels will host the preliminary regatta of the 38th America's Cup . This prestigious event will bring the five teams competing in the lead-up to the historic Naples 2027 edition , the first of the competition to be hosted in Italy, to the waters off Cagliari. The event was officially presented this morning during a press conference with representatives of the teams and institutions.

Aboard the AC40 one-design boats , all with identical configurations capable of exceeding 40 knots, the crews of Emirates Team New Zealand (with a total team of approximately 40 people), La Roche-Posay (approximately 30 people) , Tudor Team Alinghi (30 people), GB 1 (two boats and approximately 30 people) and Luna Rossa , will engage in a series of eight fleet races . On the final day, the two best teams will compete in a match race for the victory . All racing, on May 22nd, 23rd and 24th, will take place from 3pm to 5pm.

The inauguration is scheduled for Thursday the 21st at 5:00 p.m. at the Bastione Saint Remy , with the Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi , the President of the Campania Region Roberto Fico , the Governor of Sardinia Alessandra Todde , the President and CEO of Sport e Salute Spa—the event's implementing body—Marco Mezzaroma, and Diego Nepi Molineris . The Race Village, set up at the port, will be open from 10:00 a.m., and a busy program of collateral events is planned throughout the day.

"We were very keen to be part of this 38th America's Cup," emphasized Regional Tourism Councilor Cuccureddu , "because the first Italian challenge began in Sardinia with Azzurra and the will of the Aga Khan, and so we want to honor his memory. And then because the Italian challenge is Luna Rossa, which has chosen Sardinia and Cagliari as its base for 12 years now. We hope it will also be a test because, if what we all hope for were to happen, Sardinia could then host the final."

Team representatives Emily Llorens (La Roche-Posay), Nathalie Brugger (Tudor Team Alinghi), Andrea Romani (Luna Rossa), Hattie Rogers (GB1), and Dan Bernasconi (Emirates Team New Zealand) emphasized Cagliari's " extraordinary weather and sea conditions ," an aspect also emphasized by Mayor Massimo Zedda: "We present ourselves as a place where sailing can be practiced every day of the year, thanks to the weather conditions that allow teams, including Olympic ones, to train every day."
