Too many inmates, too few officers . The already difficult situation in Alghero prison has worsened with the recent transfer of inmates from Regina Coeli prison after the partial collapse of the roof at the Roman prison.
The trade unions OSAPP, CON.SI.PE., and CNPP/SPP, through their respective Regional Secretaries, have sent a joint statement to the Regional Penitentiary Administration Office denouncing the staffing shortages that are compromising the security of the prison and the protection of its officers.
There are 170 inmates present, with a capacity of 156 places. The staffing plan calls for 79 officers, but there are only 69 of them. It is emphasized that only 36 are operational in shifts , less than half the number needed. Of the 69 officers, 10 are absent daily for justified reasons, 17 are employed in permanent positions, and 6 are assigned to the Translation and Guard Unit.
Added to this are the prisoners arriving from Rome, who belong to a penitentiary circuit "not compatible with the treatment nature of the Alghero prison" .
The unions therefore requested a temporary assignment of staff and began a form of peaceful protest, a walkout from the canteen.
