"After the exceptional heatwaves of the last ten days of May and throughout the second half of June, we find ourselves facing the third, severe heat wave of this season . The script is the same: Central and Western Europe will confirm its position as the preferred route for subtropical air masses rising from North Africa, the true culprits behind what we now call 'Heat Domes' ." Thus Lorenzo Tedici, meteorologist and media manager for iLMeteo.it, confirms the return of the African heat, gradually and slowly expanding from Wednesday, July 8th onwards, with temperatures once again above the psychological threshold of human fever, from 37°C up to 40°C and beyond.
And, according to forecasts, Sardinia will be one of the regions where thermometers will rise the most : «By the weekend – explains the meteorologist – our models predict 4 0°C in Sardinia (especially in Oristano) and 39°C also in Puglia and Tuscany».
But, Tedici adds, "in the next few days, we'll have widespread temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius (!) across the Po Valley, with peaks of 39°C between Emilia and Lower Lombardy (Wednesday, July 8). In Rome, temperatures will rise to 36°C in the shade by Sunday and will remain at these Tunisian levels for the entire next week; in Milan, after a peak of 38°C on Wednesday, we'll settle at 34-35°C, but with the spectre of 'Super Tropical' nights (lows above 25 degrees) for the entire next week."
"In short," Tedici concludes, "if the heat returns in the next few days, we don't rule out the worst (if there is a worst) arriving next Sunday . We'll monitor the third heat wave of 2026, hoping the models are wrong. Currently, this new, hot phase is expected to persist for a very long time, at least until July 22-23: a summer that promises to be record-breaking for Italy."
