The reassignment of Sardinia's territorial continuity now becomes a legal issue, unless Aeroitalia reverses its decision. This would be as dramatic as the decision to end its discounted routes. The fact remains that the airline, operational since March 29, when the 2026-2029 tender was launched, cannot suspend flights in January, as announced by CEO Gaetano Intrieri. Flights must be guaranteed for another six months, not three.
Legal obligations
The timeframe for dismantling is not decided by the carrier, but is set forth in the Territorial Continuity rules. The reference is Decree 213 of September 9, 2025, signed by Transport Minister Matteo Salvini.
Point 2 of Section 3.4, on Regularity of Services, states that the airline winning the tender "may discontinue the service only if it has previously informed the Region, with notice sent at least six months before the scheduled date of discontinuation," as Councilor Barbara Manca anticipated yesterday. Therefore, on November 2nd, Intrieri officially announced the cancellation of the five discounted flights (a certified email or similar communication is still required). This means that until the beginning of May 2027, Aeroitalia cannot stop flying from Cagliari and Olbia to Rome and Milan, as well as between Alghero and the capital (the connection from the Riviera del Corallo to Linate has been extended to ITA Airways until January 31st).
