Since 2020, there have been 6,995 road accidents caused by wild animals , more than double the 2,991 of the previous five years . To try to reduce the phenomenon , the Regional Council, at the suggestion of Environment Councilor Rosanna Laconi , has allocated €460,000 to municipalities where the phenomenon is most critical: the money will be used to invest in experimental techniques such as noise deterrents and other monitoring measures.

The goal is to try to prevent animals, especially wild boars and deer, from ending up in the middle of the road, becoming a danger.

Specifically: €136,000 will be distributed between the municipalities of Sarroch and Castiadas to manage road accidents caused by Sardinian deer ; €324,000 will be divided equally between Alghero, Arzachena, Sassari, and Olbia , where the highest number of accidents involving wild boar , currently the most commonly involved species, are recorded.

"The increasingly widespread presence of wild fauna in municipal areas and along major roads," explains Councilor Laconi, "is a constantly growing phenomenon, difficult to contain , and requiring coordinated and ongoing interventions. The Regional Council has been addressing this issue since its inauguration, adopting an integrated approach that combines road safety and ecosystem protection , but which must also take into account the size of the territory and its kilometers of roadways. It is a very complex challenge ."

The funded interventions may include deterrent and removal systems, innovative prevention devices, ecological corridor management actions, monitoring activities, and experimental measures based on scientific evidence . The funding is part of an already established strategy.

"This is an ongoing effort," the councilor continues, "with guidelines that define objectives, criteria, and priorities for containing problematic species , we are implementing targeted financial support for the municipalities most exposed to risk , thus enabling the launch of experimental interventions, evaluated by the municipalities themselves with the technical support of the department."
