A substantial transformation makes the Sassari University Library accessible to all. This morning, in the beautiful building in Piazza Fiume, the results of "Ready to Access," the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) project for overcoming physical, cognitive, and sensory barriers, were presented.
The €200,000 European funding has made the public library under the Ministry of Culture truly inclusive. "Technological equipment and aids were installed and tested in collaboration with various accessibility associations," explained University Library Director Giovanni Fiori. "All staff were then trained in sign language."
A massive and complex project that not only eliminated steps and obstacles and installed elevators with Braille button panels and voice support, but also installed the “Letismart” system, which, through the use of a “smart cane” and 53 micro radio devices, provides clear and non-invasive directional voice messages, identifying access points, stairs, entrances, elevators, services and points of interest and guiding blind or visually impaired users even through the most complex routes.
Also noteworthy are the three screen readers and a fixed one, which allow you to not only enlarge a book's page and adjust its contrast, but also translate text into speech, turning any volume into an audiobook. One PC station is also equipped with a Braille keyboard, while the chairs and worktops are ergonomic and height-adjustable.
