A 72-year-old woman from Cabras experienced moments of fear during the night between Friday and Saturday, after she fell into the bed of the Rio Tanui, on Via Satta, not far from her home.
The alarm was raised at the emergency operations centre around 4am, when a neighbour heard the victim's screams and came out to see what was happening.
The pitch darkness and lack of lighting made it very difficult to locate the elderly woman, who was immersed in water up to her shoulders, clinging to some reeds, exhausted and unable to save herself.
After spotting her, the neighbor tried to help her, but to no avail. However , the intervention of the Carabinieri and then the firefighters was providential.
The officers entered the water, reached the woman, reassured her, and held her safely. Then the 115 emergency medical service arrived, rescued her using a harness, and handed her over to the 118 emergency medical service for transport to the San Martino Hospital in Oristano.
The cause of the accident is uncertain : the elderly woman, exhausted and in shock, was unable to provide an explanation for what happened. From what can be reconstructed , she apparently lost her bearings and then fell into the river, in an unfenced section.
