Planting a tree can become the symbol of a future that has its roots in legality, respect for the environment and civil memory. It happened in recent days in Villamar, a town in Marmilla, where the Comprehensive Institute hosted a special day dedicated to environmental education and social commitment, thanks to the national project "A tree for the future".
In the presence of Mayor Gian Luca Atzeni, the president of the Union of Municipalities of Marmilla Andrea Locci, the school principal Roberto Scema and Captain Michele Ravaglioli – commander of the Centro Anticrimine Natura of Cagliari – the school children planted five native trees, including phillyrea, cork oaks and holm oaks, and a very particular cutting: «The Falcone tree», a symbol of memory and resistance to organized crime.
The project, promoted by the Ministry of the Environment and implemented in collaboration with the Carabinieri Forestali, aims to build a large forest spread throughout Italy. Each tree planted is not only a contribution to the fight against climate change, but becomes part of a collective message: caring for the planet passes through individual and collective responsibility.
"What we are planting today - explained Captain Ravaglioli - is much more than a tree. It is a symbol of environmental legality, an invitation to reflect on how even organized crime is now involved in crimes against the environment. Educating young people means giving them the tools to oppose, with awareness, these crimes".
The Ficus cutting – descendant of the tree that grows next to the house of Judge Giovanni Falcone in Palermo – was reproduced by the Carabinieri National Center for Forest Biodiversity in Pieve Santo Stefano (AR), and is now traveling to Italian schools to keep alive the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for justice.
