A serious act of intimidation shattered the tranquility of Decimomannu in the early hours of this morning, Saturday, July 18. Around 4:00 a.m., a car, previously reported stolen, was set on fire in front of the entrance to the bar at the Eni gas station, located along Via Nazionale towards Assemini.
The fire and the rescue
The flames engulfed the vehicle in moments, turning it into a blaze that threatened to spread to the entire structure. Only the timely intervention of the firefighters prevented the blaze from reaching far more dramatic proportions, averting a major disaster. Firefighters worked extensively to extinguish the flames and secure the area, preventing the fire from reaching the adjacent gas pumps and tanks.
Extensive damage to the structure
Despite the rapid response, the damage remains severe. The intense heat released by the fire seriously damaged the building's windows, shutters, and air conditioning system . The building suffered significant structural and aesthetic damage that will require repairs.
The operational situation
The service station, however, has not stopped completely: fuel dispensing remains fully operational and available to motorists. The bar, however, has a different fate: it will remain closed for the entire weekend. Staff are already hard at work cleaning the interior and clearing the smoke-filled areas.
The owner's dismay
Owner Marcello Mameli, who arrived on the scene shortly after the incident, was profoundly shocked. He expressed his dismay at an act that seemed to have no immediate explanation: "We've never had any problems with anyone, we can't believe it," he stated bitterly, trying to understand the motives behind such a violent and inexplicable act.
The investigations
The Carabinieri of the local station are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. They are working to shed light on the incident and identify those responsible. In the past few hours, investigators have begun interviewing employees and potential passersby, combing through video surveillance footage in the area. They are trying to determine whether the attack was the work of thugs or whether there was a specific plot to threaten the nighttime raid.
