The memory of Marco Mameli, a young murder victim, is celebrated with a mural in the center of Ilbono . It was unveiled Friday evening with a small, well-attended and moving ceremony. The initiative was promoted by the 2002-1973 festival committees, whose members entrusted the work to Aldo Marongiu, an artist from Lanusei.
"There are wounds that will never heal. A year and a half without Marco," wrote Simona Campus, Marco's mother, on social media, "has the measure of an infinite time. Seeing this mural come to life was like seeing his light and beauty reborn in the colors of our country. From now on, anyone passing by Via Roma will be able to look up and see Marco's smile, look at him, say hello, and remember him in his beauty and his joy of life. So, today, in front of this wall, grief gives way to gratitude."
The artist was inspired by Marco's passions, portrayed astride his horse Ebano and wearing traditional dress. Among those present at the inauguration were city officials. "Even though saying thank you," added the mother of the boy killed at the age of 22, "is not enough, today we want to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to the creation of this wonderful work. We sincerely thank those who tirelessly worked to unite forces and carry this project forward, moving an entire town. A huge thank you to the 2002-1973 committee, to all the shopkeepers, friends, our family, and everyone who contributed in various ways to the creation of the work. And thanks again to those who worked with love, respect, and care before the art took shape. We are infinitely grateful to the homeowners; your gesture goes beyond simply granting them a wall. A special thanks to the artist , who was able to transform such unjust and profound pain into an act of love, before becoming a work of art, giving us the feeling of being able to look Marco in the eyes again. Now Marco is here, visible to everyone, to remind us that love is stronger than any violence.
Mother Simona, also on behalf of father Andrea and sister Laura, concluded with a message full of affection: " Infinitely grateful to have received a hug that will last forever ."
