Corallina, the Caretta caretta, is setting sail. Rescued last June after becoming entangled in plastic and ropes, it will finally return to the sea.

Her release will be the highlight of the inauguration of the new Marine Wildlife First Aid Center in the Tavolara – Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area, scheduled for Thursday, September 24th, at 9:30 a.m., in Porto Taverna, in the municipality of Porto San Paolo. Corallina, who had been found in serious distress, tangled in nylon and ropes and with a deep wound to her right fin, was rescued and entrusted to the care of the First Aid Center.

After undergoing a delicate rehabilitation period during which he also expelled some of the plastic he ingested into the sea, his condition has finally returned to being compatible with a return to his natural environment.

Corallina's release will thus represent not only the conclusion of her treatment, but also a powerful reminder of the risks that pollution and waste posed to marine life. This story will accompany the opening of the new Center, a wooden structure near the famous beach. It will become a hub for first aid and assistance to marine animals in distress, as well as an educational space, with activities aimed at citizens, children, workers, and visitors to the Marine Protected Area to increase their understanding of the marine environment and its delicate balance.

"The protection of marine fauna depends on the ability to intervene in difficult situations, but also on the essential knowledge and widespread awareness," emphasized Massimo Canu, the new president of the Tavolara - Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area. Staff from the Marine Protected Area and representatives of the Regional Network for the Conservation of Marine Fauna of the Sardinia Region will be present at the event.
