An army of men and equipment is ready to go into action to address the fire emergency in Sardinia. The Forestry Corps, Civil Protection, the Forestas Agency, the Fire Brigade, the Arpas (National Park Protection Agency), volunteer associations, and the Barracellari companies are operating on the ground. Supporting the teams on the ground are 17 helicopters from the regional fleet, including light aircraft and two Super Pumas, deployed at the Fenosu base in the Oristano area and, since June 25, at Alà dei Sardi in Gallura.

To further strengthen the firefighting system , three Canadair aircraft from the national fleet are expected on the island , expected to operate from the Olbia base. This firefighting system has already been called upon to respond to the first fires of the season and this year will have to contend with a heightened risk due to the large amount of vegetation favored by the heavy winter rains: a significant amount of "organic fuel" that must be reckoned with.

The Regional Council has approved , upon the proposal of Environmental Protection Councillor Rosanna Laconi, the regional fire prevention regulations that will accompany the 2026 AIB campaign , as part of the new regional forest fire fighting plan for 2026-2028. The period of high forest fire danger remains set from June 1st to October 31st , with the possibility of adjustments based on seasonal weather patterns. The requirements for clearing land, protective strips around buildings and infrastructure, rules for agricultural and forestry burning, safety measures for high-risk activities, and the system of authorizations and inspections entrusted to the Forestry and Environmental Surveillance Corps (CFVA) are confirmed.

The main change concerns the regulation of tourist accommodation facilities , which is now explicitly extended to parking lots and rest areas. The regulations strengthen the required safety features—perimeter firebreaks sized based on the height of vegetation and the slope of the land, at least two entrances on opposite sides to ensure alternative escape routes, surfaces free of vegetation and dry debris—and also extend them to rest areas and parking areas serving the bathing coast.

"Prevention remains the first and most important tool for protecting the territory," says the councilor. "With the 2026 regulations, we are confirming well-established rules and strengthening a system based on collaboration between institutions, operators, volunteers, and citizens."
