Sardinia has been burning since midday. Even better: the fires are spread across
all 24 hours a day, "but there is a significant peak in the time slot between 12 and 5 pm", the period of the day in which 91% of the total surface area is covered by fire.
The data says so. Because fighting fires isn't just about hoses, hoses, sweat, and ash. It's also about analysis. And the detailed report on the periods of greatest effort for the firefighting machinery comes from the Forestry and Environmental Protection Corps, led by Commander Gianluca Cocco. The trend has been consistent over the last two years and reflects a consolidated trend.
Between noon and 5 p.m. in 2025, 6,139 hectares of forest, Mediterranean scrub, and scrubland were burned (out of a total of 6,839). The numbers are updated to last week, but the fires that broke out from Punta Molentis to Orosei in the following days confirm the trend: the same time of day. The hottest, in every sense: not only is the area affected increasing, but so is the number of events, which has reached triple digits.
But why does this happen? "The time slot corresponds to the period of the day when predisposing factors are at their peak, such as increased temperatures and wind, and decreased humidity," explains Commander Cocco.
