A peregrine falcon, a female of the protected species, killed by gunshot during a day's hunting.

The regional agency Forestas reported the incident. The bird was found last Monday near the LIPU Oasis in Carloforte: it had a deep wound on one wing, caused by a shot fired the previous day by a hunter.

The bird "had arrived at the Forestas Wildlife Center in very serious condition. Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done; its right wing was devastated. Our veterinarian," the regional agency reported, "tried every treatment, then had to euthanize the poor bird of prey, beyond recovery and in great pain."

The falcon also appears in the Carta de Logu, a warning: "And Leonora of Arborea was the first European (and perhaps world) ruler to decree the protection of falcons. Who knows what Eleanor would have said today."
