The request to establish a commission of inquiry and oversight into organized crime, mafia infiltration, and corruption in Sardinia is being considered by the regional council.
The motion was placed on the agenda of the meeting scheduled for tomorrow morning , Wednesday, April 15. It is a proposal from the Uniti per Todde group supported by representatives of both sides.
Sardinia, the request begins, although not traditionally a land of historical mafia settlement, cannot be considered immune to the risks of criminal activity spreading abroad, especially in a period characterized by large public financial flows. At the same time, the promoters add, the island is currently experiencing an unprecedented period of investment linked to the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) , European structural funds, cohesion programs, and ordinary regional planning. These interventions are accompanied by strategic investments of international significance, among which the Einstein Telescope project plays a central role, destined to make Sardinia a leading scientific hub in Europe and globally . These are—it is emphasized—extraordinary opportunities in terms of development, employment, research, and innovation, but also interventions of such a financial, infrastructural, and procedural scale that they require the highest levels of transparency, traceability, and public oversight, precisely to prevent the risk that criminal interests or opaque networks could enter the chain of contracts, subcontracts, supplies, and related services.
For this reason, the establishment of an ad hoc commission is requested, which would perform various functions at least until the end of the legislative session. These include: gathering information on corruption, extortion, and crimes against public administration within the regional sphere; verifying the regularity of procedures and the allocation of regional, national, and European public funding , including those related to the PNRR, as well as the procedures for awarding contracts, subcontracts, and concessions. Furthermore, it would further develop the knowledge base, with particular reference to major strategic projects of national and European importance, including the Einstein Telescope project, regarding award procedures, the traceability of resources, and the use of public funding ; and formulating legislative, administrative, and organizational proposals to enhance the Region's effectiveness in combating organized crime and corruption.
