There is alarm and widespread concern throughout the community over a case of West Nile fever reportedly affecting a resident of Macomer. Mayor Riccardo Uda issued an order following the Local Health Authority's report of a human case of West Nile disease in a patient in the infectious diseases department of the San Francesco Hospital in Nuoro. The patient, a resident of Macomer, had been staying, prior to hospitalization, during the incubation period for the disease, on Mount Sant'Antonio (apparently during the days of the celebration attended by thousands of people), as well as in the town of Bosa.
Following the Local Health Authority's announcement, control measures were immediately implemented, along with the mayor's ordinance, which prescribes measures to control West Nile Fever, Usutu Virus, and other viral diseases transmitted by insect vectors and arboviruses dangerous to humans and animals. The ordinance asks residents and those responsible for industrial, artisanal, and commercial activities, plant and flower cultivation, and other agricultural activities, especially those within or adjacent to urban areas, not to abandon, even temporarily, objects and containers of any type or size in public and private open spaces, including terraces, balconies, and other areas, where water can accumulate and stagnate, a potential breeding ground for mosquito larvae.
Guests are therefore asked to empty unused fountains and swimming pools and prevent stagnant water. Keep courtyards and open areas free of weeds, brush, and any other waste, and arrange them to prevent the stagnation of rainwater or any other water source. It is recommended to use insect repellents outdoors, sparingly, by spraying or rubbing them on exposed skin. Guests are asked to stay in rooms equipped with mosquito screens on windows and entrance doors, ensuring they are intact and securely closed. If mosquitoes are present indoors, spray pyrethrum-based sprays or other household insecticides, or use electric insecticide diffusers. Ventilate the rooms well before entering.
