A family from Burcei was experiencing moments of fear as they were driving along the old Orientale Sarda highway toward Cagliari. At the 23rd kilometer, near Villaggio dei Gigli, a large branch from a dead pine tree fell on the car driven by a woman from Burcei, Marcella Monni, who was carrying her husband and two children, causing damage. Fortunately, the occupants only suffered a fright. The woman managed to stop the car, and no one was injured. However, the incident has refocused attention on the safety of the historic highway that connects Cagliari with several towns in the area .
After the impact, the family was forced to stop and received assistance from passing motorists. "I was driving along the former SS 125 with my family when," Marcella Monni recounted, "our car was hit by a branch from one of the pine trees lining the road. We experienced a scary moment. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but what happened demonstrates, once again, that the dangerous nature of this road cannot be ignored. The dead trees should definitely be cut down. The green ones should be pruned."
"Residents of Burcei and the various villages bordering the former 125, as well as motorists who regularly travel the road," says Vittorio Monni of the Burcei Committee responsible for traffic in the area, "have long complained about the presence of numerous dead pine trees. Due to their deterioration and lack of maintenance by Anas, they pose a real danger to those using the road , especially on days with strong winds."
Omar Zaher, head of road safety for the metropolitan city of Cagliari, also emphasizes "the need for rapid intervention by the relevant authorities. The safety of road users must be a top priority. The presence of dead trees near the roadway constitutes a risk situation that requires rapid technical assessment and timely intervention. Incidents like this highlight the importance of constant monitoring and maintenance to prevent damage to people and property."
Motorists also report the presence of potholes between the Burcei and San Gregorio junctions, which make traffic particularly treacherous.
