He was arrested moments after starting a fire in the Villasor countryside. A 78-year-old farmer originally from Monastir but living in Uta was stopped by members of the Forestry and Environmental Protection Corps.
The operation was triggered by the fires that devastated the countryside between Villasor, Monastri, Decimomannu, and San Sperate in recent days. The man, with a long criminal record, including arson-related offenses, was arrested yesterday morning.
Around 6:30 a.m., Investigative Unit personnel caught him driving along a farm road in the Crabai area of Villasor. Investigators observed the man stop his vehicle, get out, and lean over to the edge of the road, where he allegedly deposited an object in a wheat field. He then got back in his car and drove away quickly.
Moments later, a fire broke out from where the man had stood, but it was extinguished before it could cause further damage. The 78-year-old is now under house arrest.
